Long-term agreement adds Boeing 777-300ERs to coverage

SEATTLE – Boeing [NYSE: BA], Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Air New Zealand today said an agreement has been signed to expand the airline's use of the 777 Component Services Program (CSP), offered jointly by Boeing and Air France Industries KLM Engineering and Maintenance.

After gaining experience with the CSP on its 777-200ER (extended range) fleet, Air New Zealand is expanding the support for common parts to cover its fleet of 777-300ERs. These parts will be added to the existing 777 CSP agreement. The airline accepted the first of its five 777-300ERs in December 2010.

The program allows airlines to outsource the cost and logistical challenge of keeping important parts on hand. It significantly reduces the airline's up-front investment in spare parts and offers a reliable supply of critical parts. They also benefit by receiving a working component more quickly, rather than having to wait for a completed repair that could ground an airplane.

'For the past four years the 777 Component Services Program has operationally been highly successful on our 777-200ER fleet, so it is natural to expand it to include our new 777-300ERs,' said Vanessa Stoddart, group general manager, Technical Operations and People, Air New Zealand. 'The -300ER's longer range make the need for this component availability even more critical.'

"Air New Zealand, with its unique location and route structure, requires a great airplane operating at the top of its performance capability," said Dale Wilkinson, vice president of Material Services for Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. 'The 777 Component Services Program will help provide that edge.'

'Air New Zealand has chosen a program that has demonstrated its relevance to customer expectations. Since it's been launched, the 777 CSP is indeed the favorite program for 777 operators,' said Robert Anton, senior vice president, Components Services, Air France Industries.

Thirteen 777 customer airlines participate in the CSP, with a total of 135 aircraft currently operating under the program.

220 units to serve as rental cars within the Prefecture

YOKOHAMA – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced it has delivered 220 units of its 100% electric and zero-emission Nissan LEAF to rental car companies in Okinawa Prefecture, to support the project "Eco-resort Island Okinawa Promotion Project". The Nissan LEAF, which went on sale in December last year, is leading the way in the spread of electric vehicles (EV) as a means to reduce the effects of tourism on the environment.

The Ceremony launching the new EV Rental Car service held today in Tomigusuku City in Okinawa was attended by Yoshiyuki Uehara, Okinawa vice-governor and representatives from local business groups, rental car companies and travel agencies. After the ribbon-cutting event, 190 units of the Nissan LEAF made their way to destinations all over the prefecture.

Nissan has prepared about 500 units of Nissan LEAF to be used as rental cars nationwide for fiscal 2010 and 220 units, or about 40%, of them have been introduced in Okinawa. The Prefecture attracts nearly six million tourists every year and around half of them rent cars to go sightseeing. Nissan LEAF, with its excellent environmental performance is a perfect fit as it features a spacious cabin that accommodates five adults, superior acceleration performance and quietness, and a new ICT system for navigation. Nissan, through its support of this EV rental car project aims to have as much customers experience the joys of EV and create a ripple effect that will resonate its environmental benefit to the rest of the country.

Related companies within the prefecture have also established a joint company called Advanced Energy Company (AEC) to deploy charging facilities in Okinawa. Dell is helping Carnival make its vacations as seamless as possible for its customers by providing the cruise line with high performance, reliable technology solutions to help manage all of their reservations and on-board experiences.

In order to support Carnival and its guests, the IT organization needed to consolidate its infrastructure to create a reliable, self-sufficient environment and to help reduce its physical footprint. Dell helped Carnival achieve this by deploying Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell EqualLogic storage arrays onboard the line's 22 cruise ships and at their shore side data center in Miami, Fla. Carrying as many as 54,000 guests fleet-wide at any given time, Carnival needed an effective IT solution that would meet the unique criteria that comes with managing a self-contained cruise ship.

Carnival Cruise Lines can now benefit from running critical applications on their fully virtualized, Dell server and storage infrastructure by helping them save power and floor space while also reducing the amount of energy needed to operate their shipboard data centers. By implementing this new platform, Carnival has reduced their physical footprint by up to 60 percent, while the combination of storage automation and EqualLogic SANs have helped save Carnival's information systems (IS) managers an estimated 7,000 hours/year in management time.

Depending on the size of the ship, Carnival was able to reduce the number of servers, which was anywhere from 13 to 22 physical servers, down to just two PowerEdge servers. The initial deployments were high-end four-socket PowerEdge R900 servers but Carnival quickly found their workload could be supported on mainstream two-socket Dell platforms such as the PowerEdge R710.

To support their back end data warehouse, Carnival selected EqualLogic PS6010XV, PS6010XVS, PS6000XV, PS6000E and PS5000XV 10GbE and 1GbE storage arrays. With the help of software features included in the EqualLogic platform, Carnival is now able to deliver high availability and redundancy for shipboard data centers. With the successes that Carnival had with the EqualLogic platform, they decided to move their shore side warehouse onto a similar platform. Prior to the EqualLogic deployment, the data warehouse was running on a legacy Sun Solaris-based system with EMC Symmetrix storage, but both the server and storage arrays were in need of replacements and upgrades.

'Dell helped us realize the advantage of the EqualLogic PS6010XVS array, which hosts hot data on solid-state drives while pushing cold data, the least-used data, to the slower spinning disks,' says Doug Eney, Carnival's vice president of IS engineering. 'Our proof-of-concept convinced us that the Dell platform could ensure that frequently used data is available without having to manually move data between two media types. This automation showed us that with the Dell solution, we save 60 to 80 percent compared to other high-end enterprise storage options we were considering.'

Furthermore, Carnival Cruise Lines has implemented Dell solutions in its corporate and onboard environments, including Dell OptiPlex desktops, Latitude laptops and Studio One desktop computers. Not only does this help provide passengers with onboard computer use, it allows them to access Carnival Dream's Fun Hub, the cruise industry's first shipboard social network, as well as a ship-specific intranet.
