This award acknowledges environmental and innovation excellence in the meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions segment based on the results of the chain's sustainable development measures

• The prize-giving ceremony took place in Frankfurt during the gala dinner held to mark IMEX 2013, the premier exhibition in the incentive travel, meetings and events segment

NH Hoteles has been awarded another prestigious accolade for its environmental excellence and innovation on the sustainability front. The Company has just received the Green Supplier Award, one of the awards developed by IMEX and GMIC (Green Meeting Industry Council) to acknowledge the sustainability practices pursued by major companies in the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) segment.

NH Hoteles was awarded the Gold prize, the highest distinction possible. 'This Green Supplier Award fills us with pride and reaffirms the company in its sustainable development pledge. NH Hoteles is unwaveringly committed to delivering excellence and sustainable innovation. These qualities are strategic cornerstones of our business development and are increasingly demanded and valued in the MICE segment', according to Maarten Markus, Country Head for Central Europe, Benelux, France, the UK and Africa at NH Hoteles.

The IMEX Awards were developed to recognise the individual and corporate initiatives that have contributed most to development of the meeting, congress and event sector. Within these awards are the IMEX Green Awards, developed in conjunction with GMIC, which recognise the efforts made by companies to reduce their environmental and social impacts. There are four categories of IMEX Green Awards: the Commitment to the Community, Green Meetings, Green Exhibitor and Green Supplier Awards, the prize won by NH Hoteles.

The Double Tree Hotel Portland, Cape Town International Convention Centre and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre are some of the companies to have won this prize in the past. This year's prize-giving ceremony took place in Frankfurt during the gala dinner held to mark IMEX 2013, the premier worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events that takes place annually in this German city.

Sustainability leader
Since embarking on its 2008-2012 Environmental Action Plan, NH Hoteles has undertaken a series of innovative sustainability initiatives which have enabled it to deliver all its targets – namely energy savings of 25%, water savings of 30% and reductions in CO2 emissions and waste generation of 44% and 34%, respectively.

One of the factors swaying the award organisers in awarding this prize was the sustainable development initiatives offered by NH Hoteles in the business travel segment. The Group provides its clients with a series of products, including laundry bags, biros and bathroom amenities made using a plastic additive that catalyses these materials' natural degradation process. The towels in the hotel chain's guest rooms come with the ECOLABEL, the European environmentally-friendly seal that guarantees life-cycle analysis of a product's impact on the environment.

Elsewhere, all NH Hoteles guests that want to minimise the carbon footprint generated by their travels and stays at the hotels can do so by using the CO2 emissions calculator hosted on the chain's corporate website. In addition, the company offers its clients an Ecomeeting option by which they can request meeting rooms that use all manner of environmental materials and offset, if they so wish, the carbon footprint generated by their events. Thanks to this innovative initiative, the Group offset over 2,000 tonnes of emissions in 2012.

Meanwhile, NH Hoteles' restaurant business has added a range of organic foods to its gourmet offering with its 'anti-ox' breakfasts. These products satisfy the demands of the Group's most environmentally- and health-conscious guests and diners.

Thanks to all of these initiatives, the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) recently awarded NH Hoteles its Gold Medal for the Icarus Project, acknowledging the chain's sustainable development initiatives and environmental pledge. NH Hoteles was the only Spanish company added to the prestigious London Stock Exchange FTSE4Good index, which tracks the socially-responsible investing records of companies worldwide.

New Zealand wineries return to China to present a showcase of premium wines in Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou.

The annual showcase of 'What's New in New Zealand Wine' takes to the road across China from 23-29 May 2013 with wine fairs in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.

The New Zealand Wine Fair 2013 China features more than 33 wineries pouring over 150 wines from the country's 10 leading wine growing regions, a reflection of strong growth in New Zealand wine exports to mainland China.

The initiative continues the momentum of the concerted New Zealand Wine High Impact Program, implemented in 2013 by national economic development agency New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and national wine industry body, New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW).

"The number of wineries in these New Zealand Wine fairs demonstrates the importance of China as our 5th largest export market and allows the opportunity to taste premium, sustainable wines covering our key varieties and regions." says Chris Yorke, New Zealand Winegrowers' Global Marketing Director.

The Fair agenda includes trade and consumer tastings. The invite-only masterclasses to be presented by the wine experts will be highlights of the event.

"Building recognition of the New Zealand wine brand and keeping up the attention of the influencers in the Chinese wine industry will be a key factor in the success of this project,'' says Mike Arand, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise's Trade Commissioner to Shanghai.

In a major coup for New Zealand wine, Chinese wine expert Fongyee Walker will host three masterclasses titled 'New Wave Sauvignon Blanc and the North Island's Great Reds'. Respected New Zealand winemaker John Hancock will join Fongyee to host the Beijing session and Villa Maria's Charlotte Read will host the masterclass in Guangzhou. These sessions will showcase the exciting development of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and the premium quality of Bordeaux Blends by region.

With a focus on benchmark quality and regional character and complexity, the tastings will provide trade and mass audience the opportunity to discover some of the exceptional wines for themselves. For event details visit http://www.nzwine.com/events/

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is New Zealand government agency for export promotion. New Zealand Winegrowers (NZW) is the industry body for New Zealand wine.

Berlin. The 2015 Champions League Final will take place at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. This was decided by the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) at its meeting in London today. Although it remains unknown which top European teams will compete in the German capital, one winner is already clear: Berlin.

Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin, remarks: "We look forward to welcoming two million visitors who will come to the city to celebrate the best football in Europe. Berlin will also be ready to present itself as a great host to 100 million television viewers around the world."

Berlin, the Sports Metropolis

From a casual kick-around to the Olympic Games: In Berlin, athletes have home field advantage. There are some two thousand clubs in the city with about 560,000 members. Berlin is home to top teams, but not just in football: Hertha BSC has made its way back to the Bundesliga first division football; the Eisbären Berlin are Germany's hockey champions; the BR Volleys are the top volleyballers in the country and Alba Berlin won Germany's basketball cup. In addition, the professional handballers Füchse Berlin and second-division 1.FC Union call Berlin their home.

Germany's capital, with its arenas and enthusiastic audience, has often been a stage for international sporting events. Each year, Berlin hosts events such as the ISTAF athletics competition, the Sechstagerennen track cycling event and the DFB Cup final. Organisers and athletes feel at home in the city on the river Spree, where sport has long been well-established.

Sport as an Economic Driver

The latest figures show that sport was responsible for €1 billion in revenues in 2011 and provides a living for 18,000 people in the city. Sport is also an image boost for the capital. Sporting events such as the BMW Berlin Marathon attract 40,000 runners to Berlin each year as well as more than a million visitors from 120 nations.

More information about sport in Berlin can be found at sport.visitBerlin.com; the study on sport as an economic driver can be found at press.visitBerlin.de (only in German).
